CLIVE ROSEVEAR INSURANCE HAWKEY CUP FIRST-ROUND

Roche v Grampound Road

GRAMPOUND Road will visit ECB Cornwall Premier League champions Wadebridge in the last eight after a comfortable seven-wicket victory at County Division One rivals Roche on Wednesday night.

The Road had started the season superbly, winning their opening three games in all competitions, and were asked to the field by the hosts.

Roche’s decision to bat proved a bad one as Grampound’s bowlers proved incredibly tough to score off as it took until the first ball of the 13th over for the hosts to reach 50, and at that point were six wickets down.

However, a superb partnership of 85 in eight overs between Jason Williams and Lawrence Burr gave the Old Boys half a chance.

Williams struck six fours and three sixes in his unbeaten 58 from 39 deliveries, while Burr scored at better than two runs per ball as his 32 not out came from just 15 balls.

Sri Lankan Ravindra Karunaratne had the superb figures of 3-10 from his four overs.

In reply, although the in-form Jack Mingo went for just six, the rest of the innings was a procession.

Opener Harry Gregory made 36 against his former club as he and Karunaratne took the score to 84

before the latter was bowled by Oscar Green.

Green soon got rid of Gregory to make it 93-3, but that only led to the arrival of Alex May who smashed an unbeaten 45 from just 24 deliveries with four fours and the same number of sixes.

The target was reached with five overs to spare with Green (2-21 off four) by the far the best of the home attack who were missing Jacob Rowe and Stewart May.

St Blazey v Newquay

DIVISION Two East St Blazey produced a small shock as they knocked out County Division One side Newquay at the Phillip Varcoe Sports Ground.

St Blazey’s total of 121-8 was, although from daunting, a challenge on the first match played of the season at the venue, and so it proved as Newquay came up short.

Blazey’s total was based around an excellent opening partnership between new signing Ben Griffiths (55 off 56) and Matt Bennetts (31 off 34).

They never got away from the visitors and that meant the rest of the line-up had to come in and go for it.

That allowed Newquay’s bowlers to come back into the contest with Australian left-arm spinner Toby Chillingworth the pick with 2-9 from his four overs.

Jack Howarth came back on to take 4-25 from his allocation.

Newquay were missing skipper Joe Crane plus new recruits Adam Jenkin, David Atkinson and Rahim Mangal but would still have fancied their chances.

However Blazey’s steady attack proved difficult to get away as only one batsman – stand-in skipper Callan Jenkin – scored at better than a run-a-ball.

Openers Michael Harding (8 off 14) and Chillingworth (5 off 8) struggled to get the ball away before departing to Nithin Gowda (1-12 off four) and Rory Dixon (1-15 off three).

Tommy Rodda (14 off 16), who had earlier taken 2-31 with the ball, and Jenkin (16 off 11) looked to be setting up a platform, but after they departed, only Matt Hartnett with 20 at a run a ball made any impression as skipper Andy Thomas (3-15 off four) and Riley Carne (2-9 off three) took out the middle and lower order as Newquay ended on 105-9, 16 short.

St Blazey head to fierce rivals and holders St Austell in the last eight on Tuesday, May 21.
