Newquay 7 Bodmin Town 0
LEADERS Newquay will go into Saturday’s promotion showdown at second-placed Liskeard in great spirits and in a strong position after an emphatic victory over Bodmin at Mount Wise on Saturday.
With the Blues being held to a goalless draw by Holsworthy at Lux Park, the Peppermints’ lead at the top was extended to five points with six games to go.
They are now favourites to go up to the Western League, especially if they avoid defeat on Saturday.
And they are in form having won eight of their last nine league games, scoring 26 goals and conceding only three.
Manager Shaun Middleton said: “The boys were great, there was really good energy and hunger about the team.
“Bodmin kept fighting but we were very clinical and moved the ball about with real conviction.
“They were desperate to make amends for last weekend (when Newquay lost 3-0 to Honiton in the league cup).”
The opening 20 minutes at Mount Wise gave a false impression of the way the game would eventually go, with Bodmin giving as good as they got and Newquay looking rather tentative.
But that all changed in the 22nd minute when Jacob Grange broke the deadlock before Cam Turner made it 2-0 from a 33rd minute corner.
Grange scored his second and Newquay’s third on the stroke of half-time and the league’s top scorer Louis Price got into the action with two goals to extend the lead to 5-0.
An unfortunate own goal added a sixth and Tom Shepherd completed the scoring five minutes from time.
