CORNWALL SENIOR CUP QUARTER-FINAL (TUESDAY)

Sticker 0 Mousehole 3

A STUNNING goal by Tim Nixon was the highlight of Mousehole’s hard-earned victory over Sticker at a misty Burngullow Park on Tuesday night.

The Southern League Division One South team were leading 1-0 thanks to a ninth minute strike by Hayden Turner as the tie moved towards the hour mark when the ball fell to Nixon.

As it bounced to his left he connected perfectly on the turn and the ball flew past Sticker keeper Ethan Elwell into the net.

It was a goal worthy of winning any match and Mousehole did just that, adding a third goal in the last minute through substitute Ryan Tresidder.

But credit goes to Sticker too. The South West Peninsula League Premier West side matched their opponents for commitment and effort and there was no sign of heads going down at any stage.

Striker Haiden Chapman was sent off for a second bookable offence but that came too late to be a significant factor as Sticker battled to the final whistle.

Things might have been different had the home side been reduced to 10 men in the sixth minute. Tom Guest, shown a yellow card for kicking the ball away a minute earlier, dived in to try to make a tackle but caught his opponent.

It would have been easy for the referee to show a second yellow and a red but he settled for giving him a stern warning, in the presence of captain Rich Edworthy.

Three minutes later Mousehole broke the deadlock with Turner firing home from 15 yards after two attempts by the visitors had been blocked around the penalty spot.

The anticipated goals rush never came as Sticker, with the experience of Harvey Hann marshalling them well, worked exceptionally hard to close down their talented opponents.

Sticker could be well pleased to go in at half-time only a goal behind – but they really could do nothing about Mousehole’s second goal from Nixon in the 57th minute.

The remaining half-hour saw the visitors in firm control and Tresidder’s late strike gave the scoreline a more realistic look.
