SWPL PREMIER WEST (SATURDAY)
Launceston 1 Newquay 7
NEWQUAY overcome a shock early setback to cruise to an emphatic 7-1 victory at Launceston on Saturday.
The Peppermints began the game playing their usual attacking football and by making use of both wing-backs to attack the Launceston defence.
However, it was the Clarets who took the lead after only six minutes played when a rare mistake on the ball by Cam Turner saw him lose his footing which allowed forward Kian Berry to take possession of the ball, run with it to the outside of the box and strike a well-aimed shot past Newquay’s Brodie Cole.
Newquay seemed to increase the tempo of their game after the restart, they were relentless in their movement and passing, giving Launceston no chance of getting out of defence.
This paid off when they won the ball back on the right wing and the ball came to Ross Fallens who laid the ball into the box for Jacob Grange to run past a defender and strike the ball into the bottom right corner.
From then on Newquay were determined to score again and twice hit the crossbar within minutes, first with a header from skipper Harry Downing and after with a rasping shot from Louis Price.
It wasn’t long before Newquay did take the lead as Grange again with a fine run with the ball cutting in from the left wing passed the ball to Callam Maconie who slipped it into the path of Price who chipped it over Liam Hill.
Newquay’s pressure on the Launceston team was relentless, their passing and speed of play was outstanding. No sooner had they lost the ball it was won back again and moved forward.
The second half saw Newquay continue the pressure and their third goal came when the visitors were awarded a free kick just outside the box. Turner stepped up and placed the ball over the wall into the top right corner of the goal as Hill didn’t even move.
After this Newquay’s forwards were lining up to score with the ball hardly leaving the home team’s half.
So it wasn’t a surprise when the ball came to back to Maconie from Grange inside the box and he turned one way and then the other before rifling a left foot shot past the keeper to make it four.
Newquay’s fifth goal came from Grange who got himself into the box and received a perfect lay-off which he shot low past Hill for 5-1.
Newquay continued to press, bringing on fresh legs and their sixth goal came from Downing who met a Turner corner and headed the ball home.
The seventh and final goal was scored by Alex Cole after Tom Shepherd had run down the right wing, pulled the ball across the box where Cole met it with a fine shot that the keeper couldn’t keep out.
This was an excellent display of football by Newquay who went back to the top of the table with Wendron and Dobwalls both having the afternoon off.
