SWPL PREMIER WEST (SATURDAY)

Newquay 5 Penzance 1

NEWQUAY overcame a slow start to ease past fellow high-flyers Penzance 5-1 at Mount Wise on Saturday.

After announcements by Newquay’s town cryer, a two-minute silence was respectfully observed by the 341-strong crowd within the stadium before the game got underway.

But within 90 seconds the visitors were in front. From a Charlie Willis corner, an unmarked Liam Andrew came running into the box, and although he didn’t connect properly with the header, it struck Cam Turner’s leg and went in.

Newquay’s defenders seemed to be flat-footed when the corner came into the box and despite their height advantage gave away a soft goal to the opposition.

This initial shock certainly gave Penzance confidence and they pressed Newquay’s intention to play out from the back and this certainly seemed to upset the home team’s rhythm.

Within the next 20 minutes however Newquay showed why they are the top of the division with their accurate swift passing and movement around the pitch, while Jacob Grange in particular was keeping the Penzance defenders busy with his skill on the ball.

It was not until the 40th minute after Phil Lowry was fouled just outside the Penzance box that Turner stepped up and placed the ball.

Even with a five-man wall and the keeper more to his left side of the goal, Turner curled the ball into the top right-hand corner of the net, giving Mikey Flores no chance.

Within three minutes Newquay had their second goal when Ross Fallens passed out to Louis Price on the right wing who brought the ball inside beating one defender, and when others failed to challenge him he shot from outside the box which beat Flores for a 2-1 half-time lead.

Newquay had a third goal within five minutes of the restart when a corner went across the 18-yard box only to be retrieved by Phil Lowry who put the ball back into the Penzance penalty box. The ball was headed into the air and as it landed and bounced again, Price did an overhead kick to send the ball into the back of the Magpies’ net.

Within five minutes Newquay had their fourth goal of the game when Lowry’s persistent pressure on the Penzance defence led to him winning the ball back near the right corner flag.

He pulled the ball back across the 18-yard box where it found Josh Evans who put it onto his left foot and struck the ball with supreme accuracy into the net.

Newquay continued to dominate the game with their passing and movement around the pitch, and although Penzance did make some attacks into the home half, Peppermints keeper Brodie Cole had little to do during the second half.

The fifth and final home goal came when subJack Bray- Evans passed the ball down the right touchline for Price to run on to, and he took the ball, turned inside onto his favoured foot and delivered a cross to the far post which found Grange running in to have an easy header into the net.

The game ended on this score keeping Newquay, who used all five substitutes, at the top of the table.

Two player of the match awards were handed out in the home ranks, one to Louis Price for his goals and one to Jacob Grange for his constant work around the pitch and skill on the ball.
