SWPL Premier West round-up – Saturday, February 1

LISKEARD ATHLETIC kept up the pressure on leaders Newquay as both sides won before Saturday’s mouthwatering showdown at Mount Wise (3pm).

The Blues welcomed Wendron knowing that three points were crucial following Newquay’s defeat the week before, and they got the job done against a Dron side who have one of the most dangerous frontlines in the division.

Liskeard broke the deadlock four minutes before the break when a short corner routine ended with James Lorenz firing a superb finish past Zach Telling.

Both sides had their moments in a tense second half, but Darren Gilbert’s side doubled the lead 15 minutes before the end via Cam Patterson’s dinked finish.

Newquay saw off Wadebridge Town 1-0 thanks to Tom Shepherd.

Dobwalls aren’t far behind and the Dingos backed up their Newquay success with a 4-1 home victory over mid-table St Day at Lantoom Park.

James Forrest netted twice for the hosts with Josh Johnson and Colin Pritchard also on target. St Day replied through Kyle Marks.

Wendron’s defeat allowed West Cornwall rivals Penzance to move up to fourth after they saw off second bottom Millbrook 3-1.

Jacob Trudgeon put the Magpies in front after just six minutes and after missing a number of chances to double their lead, were pegged back on 32 minutes when Jay Boyle headed home from a well-worked short corner.

Penzance regrouped after the break and continued to rack up the chances and got their rewards via Silas Sullivan (66) and Curtis Smith (80).

Truro City Reserves slipped to a second successive defeat, a 1-0 loss at Holsworthy.

Max McDonald got the Magpies goal in first half injury-time.

Truro piled on the pressure late on, but the Devonians held firm.

The other match saw Bude Town see off struggling Camelford 1-0 thanks to Aaron Hart’s early strike.
