WALTER C PARSON SWPL LEAGUE CUP (SECOND-ROUND)
Newquay 4 Bridport 0
NEWQUAY gained revenge on last year’s exit in the same competition to progress with a 4-0 victory over Bridport at Mount Wise.
The Dorset outfit advanced on penalties and are solidly in mid-table in SWPL Premier East, while the Peppermints are firmly in the promotion race in Premier West.
What was going to make it even more of a challenge was the strong wind blowing from the Mayfield End towards the clubhouse.
Newquay began the game playing into the wind and dealing with a Bridport attack down the right wing.
But they soon countered down the left with a couple of throw-ins given away by the Beesdefence.
At the second Callam McOnie received the ball and took it past a couple of defenders before being fouled just outside the box. Cam Turner set the ball for what the Newquay supporters hoped would be another trademark goal and sure enough he curled the ball with his left foot low around the wall, but Bridport keeper Jordon Scadding made a great save.
Newquay’s first goal came after six minutes when Turner found Tom Shepherd with a great long ball out of defence. Shepherd, running across the pitch from left to right, found Louis Price on the right wing and he took the ball forward and then struck it towards the goal. Whether the ball was curling in the air or the keeper was just deceived by its flight, it went over his head and into the net.
The first half continued with both sides finding it difficult to play controlled football in the swirling wind, but the Peppermints went into the changing room ahead.
Newquay brought on Jacob Grange for the start of the second half to play down the right wing and replace Jack Bray-Evans.
Newquay came out and quickened the pace and tried to keep the ball on the ground as much as possible. This kept Bridport on the defensive who also found it difficult playing against the swirling wind.
Newquay were dominating the play when in the 15th minute of the second half, a long ball from captain Harry Downing over the Bridport defence allowed Price to collect the ball before beating the offside trap, continuing on and placing the ball past Scadding to make it 2-0.
Newquay’s third goal came from a great play where Tom Moxham passed to Price on the left who turned and saw Grange on his own on the right side of the 18-yard box.
The precise pass found the former Falmouth attacker who turned inside before wrongfooting the defender and placing the ball past Scadding and into the Bridport net for 3-0.
Price got his hat-trick when Aaron Dilley played the ball over the midfield to find the former Mousehole frontman.
With only one defender to beat, Price turned inside onto his favoured left foot and took a shot at goal from 20 yards which struck the back of the net.
Newquay continued to dominate the game for the remainder of the half with several opportunities to score more goals which weren’t taken.
Bridport had the odd foray forward, but home keeper Brodie Cole had very little to do throughout as the hosts eased through.
Elsewhere in the competition on Saturday, Crediton United beat Wadebridge Town 4-1, while Penzance saw off Stoke Gabriel and Torbay Police 2-0 at Penlee Park.
