WARD WILLIAMS CORNWALL SENIOR CUP SEMI-FINAL AT WENDRON UNITED AFC (TUESDAY)
Falmouth Town 3 Helston Athletic 2
HOLDERS Falmouth are back in the Senior Cup final after resisting a strong second half fightback from Helston at Wendron United’s Underlane ground on Tuesday night.
Andy Westgarth’s side established a 3-0 lead just after half-time with goals from Luke Barner (38 minutes), Brad Leivers (43) and a Rubin Wilson penalty (48).
But Callum O’Brien gave Helston hope with a headed goal after 52 minutes and when Jordan Copp converted a penalty 20 minutes from time it set up a tense finale to the tie which was played in front of a healthy 540-strong crowd.
Helston piled on the pressure and Falmouth were clearly mightily relieved to hear the final whistle.
Helston boss Matt Cusack wrote on social media: “Always disappointing to lose any game, especially a semi-final, but proud of our Helston team given we had no recognised striker for the tie unfortunately.
“Felt we just ran out of time at the end as well. Congratulations to Falmouth Town on the win.”
Falmouth will meet the winners of tonight’s semi-final between Mousehole and St Austell at Porthleven’s Gala Parc (7.30) in the final.
