WESTERN LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
St Blazey 0 Brislington 1
MARK Carter, who has been appointed manager of St Blazey for the remainder of the season, couldn’t hide his disappointment after the Green & Blacks suffered defeat at Blaise Park on Saturday.
A Jordan Scadding goal after 26 minutes proved enough for Brislington to return to Bristol with all three points and to leave Blazey empty-handed only a week after beating leaders Clevedon Town.
Carter, coach of the club’s under 18s before stepping up to replace Lee Denton, said: “Today was a disappointing outcome. Over the past few weeks we’ve worked hard on not conceding cheap goals.
“Today our issue was at the other end of the pitch. Despite dominating the game we have created absolutely nothing going forward in the final third.
“We weren’t creative enough, nor posed a threat when needed. Our defensive play and build-up was spot on but when it mattered at the business end we went missing. That’s what cost us a result.
“In a game where we expected to take something I’m left with a bitter taste after walking away with nothing.
“Despite the result we head into Wednesday night (at home to Barnstaple) still confident of getting something out of the game.”
Blazey made a decent start to Saturday’s game with a number of early corners and Will Tinsley’s long throws causing problems in the penalty area, but the ball would just not run for them in front of goal.
Then midway through the first half a mix-up between 17-year-old keeper Jack Hicks and his defenders on the edge of the Blazey penalty area provided Scadding with an opportunity on a plate.
With the unguarded net in front of him, Scadding directed a left foot volley in to give the visitors the lead.
Blazey dominated the rest of the half without carving out a clear chance and eight minutes into the second half they were fortunate not to go 2-0 down.
Keeper Hicks raced to the edge of the penalty area to attempt a clearance but sliced his kick and the ball fell to Callum Pritchard, who sent his shot crashing against the bar.
This scare launched Blazey into action and they had a good chance to equalise just after the hour when a superb corner from the left by Alfie Fothergill picked out the unmarked Ben Rowe, but his header cleared the bar.
The home side continued to pour forward but they were leaving gaps at the back and only a magnificent tackle by Tinsley prevented Scadding scoring his and Brislington’s second goal in the 79th minute.
Blazey were exposed again a minute from the end of normal time when Shea Mannings raced clear, but his shot was brilliantly kept out by Hicks. The rebound was put in but the effort was ruled out for offside.
Hicks made two more fine saves in time added on as Brislington finished the game strongly.
