PORTHPEAN GOLF CLUB

THE Seniors entertained a team from Boringdon Golf Club in Plymouth on Monday, May 13 where they were able to collect an impressive 4.5 to 1.5 victory.

A day later the Seniors took their partners for a ‘Waltz’ Stableford with teams of three counting the best score on hole one, the two best on hole two and all three on hole three, and so on. 

The team comprising Mike Partridge, Steve Sloggett and Martin Drew amassed 74 points to win on countback from Keith Bolton, Peter Brown and Alan Crawford in second place. 

Two points back, two teams were split on countback for third and fourth: Harry Fryer, Terry Richards and John Dearing, from John Henry, Steve Madigan and Derek Masters. Just two twos were recorded.

The Wednesday saw the Ladies played a qualifier for the Ping Ladies 4BBB National Competition. First pair home were Teresa Phillips and Liz Andrew with 37 points from Jackie Oliver and Ann Mee in second place on 34 points.

The Summer League was the challenge for the men on the Wednesday. 

A strokeplay event this time with Peter Fox carding a nett 65 to win by a stroke from Ian Smith and Alan Plaice in second and third on countback. 

Five shots back on 71, Derek Williams and Dave Parsall were also split for fourth and fifth. 

Steve Arthur grabbed the last league point with a nett 72. Ian Harris scored the lowest gross with 77 and there were two twos recorded.

While the Summer League was in progress, club captain Michael Rooney was at Mullion as part of Cornwall Golf Week to challenge for the Lawrence Cup, a trophy he won two years ago. 

He reclaimed it with a score of 39 points, a point ahead of his nearest rival.

The Seniors were on their travels on Thursday, May 16 with a trip to Falmouth where they suffered a defeat by the same margin as the home match three days earlier.

The Sunday Strokeplay competition on May 19 saw a 40-strong field headed by Geoff Miller with a nett 65, a stroke clear of Division One winner Nathan Fitzpatrick. 

A further stroke back in second place, Keith Grigg was a stroke ahead of Steve Arthur in third. Tony Kellow carded the lowest gross score of 77 in fifth. 

Division Two was won by Lee Varney, two strokes clear of Chris Lydon in second and three ahead of Vince Averill in third. Four two's were recorded.

Seniors member Martin Drew sponsored a two-man Scramble on Tuesday, May 27 with free entry and Martin providing all the prizes attracting a 50-strong field taking part in drizzly conditions. 

John Hendry and Steve Madigan scored a nett 62 to win the Martin Drew Cup on countback from Steve Arthur and Tony Kellow in second place. 

Seniors captain Viv Rodd and his partner Keith Boulton were a stroke back in third, on countback from fourth and fifth, Mike Partridge with Chris Mags followed by Peter Setchell and Nathan Lake. 

There were a number of spot prizes with club captain Mike Rooney firing the longest drive on the 18th and nearest-the-pin awards going to Biff Griffin on the 11th, Mike Taylor on the 14th and Richard Holmes only two inches from an ace on the 16th.

The men played a round of Summer League on Wednesday, May 29 with Alan Plaice heading the field with 40 points, two ahead of Vince Averill in second place. 

A point back three players vied for third, fourth and fifth, in order, Nathan Fitzpatrick, Gary Sullivan and Steve Bennetto. 

Derek Williams grabbed the remaining league point with 36 points and there were three twos.

With the new month came the monthly medal for June which was won by Michael Meares with a nett 65 on countback from Division One winner and second, Steve Arthur and Jeremy Maude, with the latter taking the St Austell Print Trophy for the lowest gross score of 71. Danny Lawer was third with a nett 67. 

Division Two winner scored a nett 69 to win on countback from Ray Nancholas, Vince Averill and Derek Williams in second, third and fourth. Just three two's were recorded.

The first round of the club championship knockout stage has been completed with Ben Bond, Steve Arthur, Jeremy Maude, Michael Rooney, Tony Kellow, Danny Lawer, Ian Harris and Peter Setchell progressing to the second round of the scratch competition, while Simon Hartley, Karl Rance, Stuart Watson, Jim Oliver, Keith Grigg, Paul Farquhar, Dave Parsall and John Sweet will play out the handicapped plate competition.

THIS competition for the Colin Marshall Trophy was set up to raise money for the seniors captain’s charity, which this year was The Merlin Centre. The day raised £821.50. 

A prize is only awarded to the winning team and they were, Tony Morgan, Geoff Cox, David Weeks and Dave Huxtable with 91 points.
