New research has revealed the best spots in the UK to find a vegetarian chippy tea - and there's one in Cornwall. 

The research, from online casino Betway, looked at the most populated and most popular towns and cities in the UK and assessed their chip shops by menu and rating. 

Newquay was ranked as the third-best place in the UK for vegetarian-friendly menus at its chip shops, including options such as cheese and onion pies, veggie dippers and vegan burgers. 

The town is only beaten by Birmingham and Nottingham, which are joint first in the rankings. 

The highest-rated chippy in the area, Francine’s Newquay, has 34 vegan and vegetarian options available. 

It isn’t only in vegetarian options that Newquay chip shops dominate, with the town also being ranked the second-best place to enjoy fish and chips by the sea, with the highest-rated takeaway being just 0.64km from the seaside. 

Newquay also falls in the top 10 rankings for the most chip shops, coming in at seventh with a staggering 73 chippies. 

When visiting Newquay, many people are actively looking for fish and chips, with an average of 600 monthly searches online - the sixth most in the UK.

Betway said: “It’s no secret that fish and chips reign as one of the UK's biggest delicacies, but the new research has revealed which cities come out on top for their fish and chips offerings.

“Taking a seedlist of some of the most populated cities, as well as some of the most popular staycation destination spots in the UK, the team set out to discover which cities reign as the best spots to enjoy a classic fish and chips to help hungry Brits plan their next trip around their favourite cuisine.

“Although the main focus of a chippy is its seafood, it is possible to find vegetarian options at a fish and chips takeaway and a new study has revealed which cities are leading the way for having the most vegetarian-friendly options on their menu.

“As part of the report, the team looked at the highest-rated chippy in each city and compared how many vegetarian-friendly menu items they have on offer.

“Newquay is in second place, whose highest-rated chippy (Francine's Newquay) has an impressive 34 vegetarian-friendly items on offer.”
