Conservative – Derek Thomas

As a former tradesmen in the building trade I understand the challenge of meeting housing need and to ensure homes are healthy and warm to live in.

West Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are beautiful places to live and raise our families. It is inevitable that housing supply won’t meet demand. Working with my Conservative colleagues in Cornwall and Devon, I have been able to help secure some important changes to housing law. A Stamp Duty premium applies to people buying an additional home. Significant sums have been awarded to Cornwall Council from this revenue to be used to ease the housing pressure. The Council Tax premium will also increase funds for Cornwall Council.

A register of holiday lets and a planning clause that gives powers to planners to prioritise homes as principal residence will help to strike a better balance for local families. We need to go further. If re-elected I will challenge unnecessary and regressive red-tape in the planning system, continue to work to create more construction apprenticeships, promote Rent-to-Buy initiatives so that families have secure tenancies with the opportunity to buy later and I will continue press for funds to upgrade existing homes for low-income families.

Labour – Dr Filson Ali

Today (June 6) is the 80th anniversary of D-Day. For me the day brings back memories of my own trip to the Normandy beaches in France eight years ago.

It was a privilege to volunteer to accompany four war veterans and their families to Normandy. There, I provided medical support and emotional care while paying tribute to the bravery and sacrifices made on those historic battlefields."

Listening to firsthand accounts of the battle on the beaches of Normandy was an extraordinary experience, one that deepened my appreciation for their courage and resilience.

I now work as a doctor in general practice, but retain a deep commitment to the armed services. If elected I pledge to be a steadfast advocate for our Armed Forces communities in the constituency, ensuring they receive the unwavering support they rightfully deserve.

After 14 years of Conservative governments the Army has been cut to its lowest level since Napoleon. One in five Royal Navy ships have been taken out of service and just over the last five years 200 aircraft have been cut from the Airforce. In government Labour is committed to increasing defence spending to 2.5 per cent of GDP.

Green Party — Ian Flindall

UN climate scientists confirmed this week we have just five years to put in place the measures to prevent global temperature rising above 1.5 degrees Celsius beyond which climate change will be catastrophic.

I am standing because I don’t want my grandchildren to ask why we didn’t do enough when we could have made a difference.

For many years the Green Party has been developing policies to enable our economy to meet our needs without damaging the environment. Happily, these policies go hand in hand with the need to address the cost-of-living crisis that we are all battling with:

We will reduce energy costs by instigating a street-by-street energy efficiency upgrade to all our hard to heat granite homes regardless of household income.

We will get water bills and sewage pollution under control by bringing water companies back into public ownership and stopping payouts to shareholders.

We will incentivise first affordable homes and disincentivise empty second homes.

We will support local food production for local people to reduce the capital that supermarkets take out of the county.

The plan is to support local circular economies to keep wealth in the community.

• Also standing is Andrew George (Liberal Democrats) and Giane Mortimer (Reform UK).
