Conservative – Derek Thomas

We’ve seen a quiet revolution in the way we deliver NHS services in West Cornwall and on Scilly. NHS services, delivered closer to home, have increased and these are led by practitioners who live among us and know our community.

Examples include the development of Primary Care Networks, where GP practices are clustered and share and host more consultations and treatments. PCNs are better placed to understand demands on community services and can help to direct resources. Other developments include greater integration of health and care services and a ‘falls service’ that has reduced the number of older people ending up in A&E unnecessarily (we all except there is more to do).

Social prescribing has become an established part of local NHS treatment as a means to improve a patient’s wellbeing and the Pharmacy First model allows pharmacists to prescribe medication for common ailments. The building of the Outpatient Department in Penzance and the Integrated Healthcare Hub on Scilly also demonstrate a commitment to delivering healthcare as close to home as possible. Pressures exist and there is more to do.

Rather than be obstructive, I’ve worked closely with the NHS to support these developments, including training nurses ‘on the ward’ to address workforce challenges.

Liberal Democrats – Andrew George

Together we can restore our country and get things back on the right track. It won’t be easy. Cornwall and Scilly have been taken for granted. I’m determined our voice should be heard again.

Together we can rebuild our NHS; reverse the widening inequality; restore our reputation in the world; fight climate change; secure housing justice; restore nature and curb the appalling sewage spills around our coast.

It’s not just that we must defeat the Conservatives – vitally important though that is. We must also build a broad consensus for change. I’m keen to work with those who want to help rebuild a kinder society. This is essential to deliver a stronger economy and a sustainable environment.

My first priorities for our area if elected will be to restore 24/7 urgent treatment at West Cornwall Hospital, press for the delivery of in perpetuity homes for locals, end tax loopholes on holiday homes to pay for homes for locals, accelerate action to stop sewage spills by controlling unjustified top exec/shareholder rewards in the water industry and to ensure the efficient delivery of remaining town deal and other investment programmes.
