OVER the last year or so I have to admit to getting out of the habit of regular public garden visiting. One reason is that I have been particularly busy since the spring establishing our new allotment.
During the last month, we therefore decided that we should visit some gardens in the UK that we haven’t seen for some years.
I find visiting gardens a very valuable experience. It can be relaxing and I also frequently learn new ideas or am inspired to develop our own garden in new ways. A recent visit to the historical and famous National Trust Hidcote Gardens near Evesham has inspired me in many ways. I have always enjoyed its various “garden rooms” but my latest trip got me thinking much more about the use of colour and colour combinations in the garden.
I have also been thinking about why other people visit gardens. Some may want to learn from them as I do. However, I think many simply enjoy looking at beautiful plants, vistas and planting combinations without any intention of trying to apply what they see at home. Garden visiting can be a really good way of getting exercise, fresh air and being close to nature.
During my recent visits, I have also noticed many families enjoying gardens. Some gardens have become very creative at developing new activities and distractions geared to younger audiences. Hopefully this will help inspire new generations of future gardeners.
As a dog owner, I do value gardens that also permit dogs on leads to accompany their owners. I think most dog owners are highly responsible and I am sure more garden visiting is encouraged by a welcoming attitude to dogs and their owners.
So, if you have some time spare, I really would recommend visiting a public garden. Smaller gardens can sometimes be easier to relate to our own gardening experiences.
There are many different ways of enjoying gardens and they are all equally valuable. Perhaps you need some time out, a distraction or change of scene. May be you are looking for some ideas that will help inspire your own gardening. Whatever your reason, make sure you have a lovely time.
