“I am proud of the work my new team has done to get us towards some semblance of a normal working pattern within just six weeks of my election”

I am committed to being an active constituency MP. A big part of that is supporting constituents on the issues they raise with me from planning, potholes, parking, and everything else in between.

Since the General Election an enormous number of constituents have reached out to me. My team has opened and begun to deal with nearly a thousand cases. I appreciate everyone’s continued patience as we prioritise the most urgent cases. We have already helped constituents with a wide variety of challenging and complex issues, from benefits, homelessness, and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities cases.

I have raised numerous issues with Cornwall Council’s Highways team and they have responded to my concerns with urgency, for instance, acting to improve safety at the junction at Hendra.

I have received many messages about the changes in eligibility for Winter Fuel Allowance – a difficult decision made to help plug the £22bn blackhole left in the country’s finances by the previous Conservative government. There are many pensioners (up to 37%) not claiming Pension Credit which would make them eligible for Winter Fuel Allowance and, beyond that, almost 900,000 eligible for the Winter Fuel Allowance already not claiming it. As such I will be holding Pension Credit surgeries in the coming months to ensure the most vulnerable pensioners in St Austell & Newquay constituency who qualify for benefits are assisted with their claims.

I’ve embraced, rather shied away from other challenging issues like Boardmasters. I have raised constituents’ feedback to the organisers and volunteering to play an active role in their review meeting, to influence the shape of the festival next year.

I have held two surgeries so far, one in St Austell and one in Newquay. I am looking forward to hosting further surgeries in the pipeline in Clay Country in St Stephen on 7th September and St Dennis on 14th September, with a possible third date depending on demand. These will be by appointment which can be booked by contacting me on [email protected] or ringing 020 7219 7751.

I am proud of the work my new team has done to get us towards some semblance of a normal working pattern within just six weeks of my election.
