EARLIER this week we heard of the closure of a landmark of many of our childhoods: Dairyland.

Open for 50 years, Dairyland has been enjoyed by generations of tourists and locals alike. I remember great days out there as a child and its closure really feels like the end of an era – as well as an indication of the dire state of the country.

Of course, part of the reasons Dairyland cited for closing were unavoidable: the pandemic had a massive hit on all of us, particularly on places that relied on visitors. But there were also hardships – energy bills, bank interest rates – that were entirely avoidable.

As a new MP, I don’t want to see any other cherished attractions going the same way as Dairyland. Even in my few months, I’ve heard the difficulties of local leisure businesses and tourism attractions where trade is falling.

This is why I’m backing this Labour government’s string of announcements that will help us invest in a Cornwall built to last.

Whether this be on skills, housing, energy or the economy, this Government is showing it will deliver for Cornwall, bringing greater prosperity, secure and affordable housing, and a revitalisation of our towns.

Unfortunately, this Labour government have been left with a mountain to climb. But it can be done with sensible economic measures, and this is exactly what the Chancellor is promising: stability, trust and an economy built to last.

This is reflected in our missions for government: to get UK economic growth to the highest sustained level in the G7. And achieving this goal will benefit the whole of the UK, including Cornwall, as interest rates drop and we tackle the cost of living crisis in our areas.

Alongside this, we heard last week of a new deal to give greater power to Cornwall Council over skills, meaning we can focus on what’s needed locally, creating the skills needed for our future so people in Cornwall can thrive.

The government are also focusing on making Britain a clean energy superpower, with zero-carbon electricity by 2030. This will be key not only to reducing energy bills, but hopefully in job creation as Cornwall can offer its land and landscape to sourcing renewables.

As your MP, I will keep the fight to get Cornwall’s voice heard in Parliament, and ensure that no other attraction is forced to go the route of Dairyland.
