FABULOUS scenery in the vicinity of Godrevy Island and Hell’s Mouth is highlighted today, as the Voice continues its serialisation of the travel book, Cornwall Favourites For One And All!: A Quick Guide To Good Places To Visit Across The County.

Voice journalist Andrew Townsend, the author of the book, says: “Our journeying around Cornwall has recently seen us in the west of the county, visiting Sennen Cove, Cape Cornwall, the Tin Coast, St Ives, Carbis Bay and the Hayle area.

“For the latest part of the tour, we are following the extensive northern coast of Cornwall in a generally north-easterly direction. The stretch of the coastline north of Hayle has some truly awe-inspiring sights and is well worth a visit.”

Godrevy Island sits just off beautiful Godrevy Point. The octagonal lighthouse was built on the small island in 1859 to warn vessels of treacherous rocks.

A light shone out across the sea from the white tower until 2012 when a new steel structure on the island took over duties.

Back on the mainland, the Red River flows into the sea at Godrevy beach near the village of Gwithian. The river gained its name thanks to mining deposits which turned its waters red.

To the east of Godrevy Point are some towering cliffs, including those of the ominously-named Hell’s Mouth. You can look down the 300ft drop and watch seagulls circling below.

Hell’s Mouth has experienced landslides and one such dramatic event was captured on video in 2011.

Next time, we will be visiting the coastal communities of Porthreath and Porthtowan, known for their beaches and industrial heritage.

Our extensive tour around Cornwall, visiting well-known spots but also lesser-known locations, offers something for everyone, from sandy beaches, remote moorland, storm-beaten cliffs and scenic rivers to historic towns, pretty villages, mining relics and visitor attractions.
