THREE-TIME world bodyboard champion Jeff Hubbard put on a masterclass performance during a coaching weekend in Newquay.

The Hawaiian demonstrated how to pull off radical, technical manoeuvres including spins and rolls at Fistral and Perranporth Beach during the event, which was attended by bodyboard enthusiasts from around the country.

Bodyboard Holidays at Newquay Activity Centre in Fore Street, which organised the coaching weekend, also staged an evening with Jeff Hubbard at the Oceanside Hotel in aid of the RNLI on Saturday night.

Dozens of bodyboarders attended the engaging Q&A session including 2017 world bodyboard champion Iain Campbell from South Africa, who now lives in Cornwall.

Jeff spoke about how he got into bodyboarding, his inspirations, his favourite waves and riders, his hardest ever contest, how the sport could evolve in the future and some of the highlights from his illustrious career, which includes five IBA Pipeline Pro wins.

The 47-year-old from Kauai also talked about the importance of his stretching routine, which enables him to pull off his innovative manoeuvres and to pursue a career in bodyboarding long after many other top riders have retired from the sport.

Jeff gave a first-hand insight into how he co-founded the renowned bodyboard brand Hubboards with his brother Dave Hubbard, which has pushed the boundaries with board design and innovation.

One lucky attendee won a board Jeff has ridden at Pipeline in Hawaii after his question was chosen to be the best one submitted.

Jeff, who stayed in Newquay with his wife and children during the trip, said: “It has been lovely weather, the scenery and beaches are beautiful, and we’ve had some great fun surfs.

“Everyone has been really nice, and Bodyboard Holidays is the best place ever.

“My wife and children enjoyed the market in town and the aquarium. They especially loved the ice cream. They’ve loved it so much and want to move to Newquay.”

Rob Barber, the director of BodyBoard Holidays, said: "Welcoming the three-time world champion to Newquay offered the opportunity for the UK bodyboarding community to come together and learn from the very best in the world.

“Guests travelled from all over the UK and marvelled at Jeff's ability to ride the small waves at Fistral and Perranporth.

“He proved that no matter that if the waves were small, in the hands of the world’s best, the most technical moves can be performed.

“The assembled crew were amazed and inspired by his performance. In July Jeff will be celebrity coach on our trip to Portugal where we are welcoming guests from all over the world to enjoy the fantastic beach breaks along the south and west coast.”
