WORK is underway on the construction of a new £1million community building and place of worship in Newquay.
A turf cutting ceremony was held to get the build started for the Newquay Methodist Centre at Pargolla Road.
The centre, which is due to open by September 2025, will include four sections including an area for worship, community space, an office and a kitchen with a communal table that will seat 20 people.
The Newquay Methodist Centre will offer various styles of worship including all-age, traditional, café church, contemporary and songs of praise.
The community space will host various groups including craft-ernoon, a toddler group, coffee mornings and bereavement support.
There will also be dementia awareness sessions, pilates, a youth club, Ukrainian language support and community drop-ins.
The Newquay Methodist Church has been planning the Newquay Methodist Centre for more than 15 years after selling Claremont Methodist Church in Beachfield Avenue, Colan Methodist Church and Wesley Methodist Church in Fore Street.
They had planned for years to construct the centre at Nansledan, but the scheme did not come to fruition as it was considered to be unviable.
The Newquay Methodist Circuit looked at other sites in the town and decided the vacant plot in Pargolla Road would be a suitable location for its community and worship space.
The scheme is being built by Poltair.
Church Stewards Sue Jackson, Hazel Burn, Tony Harries, and Pauline Scotting, said: “After a lot of patience, perseverance and faith we are excited and overjoyed to be building at last.
“It’s finally started, after many trials and tribulations.
“We have every intention of making our new Methodist Centre, a welcoming place for everyone. So, watch this space.
“We are here to be able to serve this community in the Name of Jesus only through the vision of people who have gone before us for the hope and future of those here and now, and yet to come.”
Rev Clare Anderson added: “The Newquay Methodist Centre will not just be about coming in for Sunday worship. Church is every day. Not just Sunday.
“People should think of us as their community space, their village hall and their local Christian Church to offer spiritual fellowship.
“Don’t worry if the church is not your thing. We welcome everyone to our groups, courses and classes.
“Anyone that is interested in faith and want to find out more they will be more than welcome to the faith-based activities we offer.”
Operations Manager Alyce Finney said: “We are a church after all, so we do lots of things faith-related, but we also run groups like toddler’s, bereavement courses, arts and crafts and we will be open if people just want to come in for a cuppa.”
