Work is underway on the £120,000 expansion of Newquay’s popular skatepark.

Concrete Waves is being enhanced with a new area specifically designed for beginners of all ages to learn, develop, and hone their skills before venturing into the more challenging aspects of the park.

The scheme will also include an acoustic wall to reduce noise for residents living nearby.

The phase two of Concrete Waves is a joint effort by Newquay Town Council, which owns the skatepark, the Boardmasters Foundation and Cornwall Council.

Some non-native trees adjacent to the footpath near the park will be removed as part of the enabling works required for the scheme.

The construction phase is scheduled to be completed by Spring.

The Boardmasters Foundation and Cornwall Council's Community infrastructure Levy has provided £50,000 apiece for the project and any outstanding balance needed will come directly from town council funds.

Mavericks Industries, which built the original Concrete Waves skatepark, is constructing the beginner’s area.

The contractors are making every effort to keep the majority of the main park open during the construction period, with potential temporary closures only in the event of unforeseen circumstances.

Treveth Holdings Ltd, the company developing the parcel of land next to the skatepark, is collaborating with Newquay Town Council to ensure that this tree removal process is compensated through a comprehensive tree replacement program.

A row of trees will be planted at the bank at the back of the park, guaranteeing no net loss in tree canopy in the long term.

Sam Reynolds, the director of Maverick Industries, said: “We're rolling straight into 2024 with phase two of our much-loved Concrete Waves skatepark making it even bigger and better than before.

“Newquay Town Council has commissioned the addition of a new beginner's area, making it a more inclusive and enjoyable space for everyone.”

A spokesperson for Newquay Town Council, said: “The project is a testament to the commitment of Newquay Town Council to promote recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

“The expansion will not only elevate the skatepark's appeal but also contribute to the growth of skateboarding as a sport in the region.

“Concrete Waves Skatepark has been a cornerstone of the Newquay community, providing a dynamic space for individuals to express themselves through skateboarding and other action sports. The upcoming expansion is set to further solidify the skatepark's status as a premier destination for enthusiasts of all skill levels.

“The park is known for its dynamic features and commitment to providing a welcoming environment for individuals of all skill levels.

Councillor Andy Hannan added: “Having been closely involved in the original delivery of the fantastic Concrete Waves facility, from the old wooden waves park, I am excited to be part of this long-awaited extension.

“The new facility will allow our younger, less experienced users to hone their skills in safety, whilst having the minimum impact on the more experienced skaters and riders enjoying the main area of the park.

“A massive thank you to the Boardmasters Foundation and Cornwall Council for contributing towards the funding needed to deliver this project, and to Mavericks for not only delivering the class-leading Concrete Waves in the first instance, but for sharing their knowledge and vision on this new extension.

“Finally, a big thank you to the town council officers and fellow council members for their unwavering support throughout this project.”
