One of the oldest Women’s Institutes in the country has been taking steps towards recovery after suffering a burglary last year.
As part of the process, Newquay WI, which is 106 years old, has a new banner made by member Siriol Ainge.
Members were left heartbroken after their original banner and other historical artefacts were reportedly taken during a break-in at their premises in Crantock Street in December.
The group has now unveiled the new banner, which depicts the Huer’s Hut in Newquay and will be displayed by members at various events.
Siriol said: “I wanted the ladies to be happy with the banner.
“I wanted to make sure we had our history back following the burglary. A WI is not a WI unless it has a banner as that is the recognition of who we are. I’m really pleased with how the banner turned out.”
Liz Howarth the president of Newquay WI, said: “I was chatting to Siriol at a luncheon about our need for a banner and she mentioned she had previously made one in Wales.
“Siriol offered to make a new banner and we asked the ladies what they would like to see on it. I embroidered the Huer’s Hut on there and Siriol made the Cornish flag and the rest of the banner.
“Members are really happy and we have got our history back. We have not been able to march with a banner since the burglary so it’s like we’ve got our identity back. Newquay WI has risen like phoenix following the break-in We are here to stay.”
Jackie Pascoe, the treasurer of Newquay WI, said: “Members were heartbroken when the club was broken into.
“They are now overjoyed the WI has a new banner. The break-in was a year ago. Someone must know who did it.”
