A YOUNG woman was discovered dead in Newquay after emergency services were scrambled on Monday night (May 20).
Newquay and Padstow Coastguard Rescue Teams, Newquay RNLI Lifeboats, the SAR Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 924 and the ambulance service were tasked to assist the police following concern for the welfare of a woman at the Barrowfields at about 7.30pm.
The woman, who was in her 20s and from the Newquay area, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Devon and Cornwall Police has made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct as officers had prior contact with the woman on Saturday, May 18.
A spokesperson said: “Police were called following a concern for welfare for a woman in the Narrowcliff area of Newquay.
“Emergency Services attended the scene, including HM Coastguard and the RNLI.
“The woman, who was in her 20s and from the Newquay area, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Her next of kin have been informed.
“The death is not being treated as suspicious at this time.
“Due to prior police contact with the woman on Saturday 18 May, a mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), as is normal procedure in these circumstances.”
