A motorist who parked an SUV on a beach in Newquay was left red-faced - after it got stuck in the sand on Thursday morning.

The Mercedes 4x4 vehicle became wedged on Towan Beach before it was towed away.

The beach does have a slip road, but only for authorised vehicles to use.

Darren Bassett, 51, who runs The Cornish Pasty Box, said: "Thankfully it was towed before high tide came it. It would have completely washed it out to sea.

"There is a cobbled slip road that goes from the main road for the beach.

"But it's for council vehicles and things, not for the public.

"I don't think some people understand that sand isn't like tarmac.

"You can't just drive on it.

"As soon as it hits tourist season these things happen more often. I guarantee in the next few months this will happen to half a dozen more cars."
