Cllr North received the Armed Forces Flag for Newquay during an Armed Forces Day flag relay event held at RAF St Mawgan, which was attended by Station Commander Wg Cdr Marshall Kinnear, Deputy Lieutenant Jane Hartley, serving RAF St Mawgan military personnel, veterans and cadets.

Cllr North said: “Across the county flag raising ceremonies are taking place to mark the start of Armed Forces Week.

“Flags will be raised on public buildings in England, Scotland and Wales, including Town Halls, council buildings, the Houses of Parliament, military outposts overseas and here in Newquay as a mark of respect and thanks to the servicemen and woman past and present for what they have done and continue to do on a daily basis.

“It is our opportunity to thank them and to celebrate the exceptional contribution they make to our security and prosperity.

“It is worth remembering that the Armed Forces community is a large one, but also the reserves, the cadets and all their families, as well as ll the veterans, those who have served earlier in their careers,

“As such, the Armed Forces and Cornwall have a close and historic relationship.

“The national event will give the people of Cornwall, and the public as a whole, the chance to thank the Armed Forces for their tireless work in keeping our country safe.

“It is a great honour and privilege to take part in this flag raising ceremony which is a clear and visible manifestation of our community’s support.

“On behalf of Newquay residents I would like to say thank you.”
