A PROJECT to upgrade a museum in a tourism hotspot in Cornwall has been completed.
A new entrance has been created at Mevagissey and District Museum where the roof has also been renewed.
A total of £52,746.51 for the work came from Cornwall Council’s Community Levelling Up Programme, part of the Good Growth Programme which is delivering the UK Shared Prosperity Fund in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, while £20,000 was raised in the community.
Museum chair Jane Morgan said: “It’s great to see our museum looking so splendid following the completion of works to renovate the roof and develop a new entrance.
“Our museum is located in a key part of the picture postcard view of Mevagissey and so getting these works right, using local businesses and with the support of Cornwall Council, was absolutely paramount.
“Now the works have finished, they will help keep our exhibitions safe and preserved, while the new entrance will better showcase our museum for visitors old and new alike, while giving us more space to display the valuable items of historic interest that we are the custodians of.
“We look forward to having a formal opening and celebration of this successful project in the spring.”
The celebration will take place on March 30.
Cornwall councillor James Mustoe said: “I am delighted to see another project funded by Cornwall Council’s Shared Prosperity Fund, along with generous funding from our community, successfully concluded in my area.
“Thanks, in particular, to local craftsman Geoff Barham for leading on the work to renovate this iconic part of our village, to ensure that its history and heritage will be enjoyed by many more generations over the years to come.”
Meanwhile, the museum has also been able to invest in new branding and signage thanks to a donation from resident John Brown.
