Two free sessions are being held for people who suffer with hearing loss to find out more about diabetes in Camborne on February 13 and 27 with British Sign language interpreters and diabetes experts providing useful information, advice and support.

People with diabetes or people who may have a family history of diabetes are encouraged to attend these two free events, which will provide essential support and guidance to those at risk, newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, as well as those already living with the condition. Family members and caregivers are also encouraged to attend.

The session will cover advice on:

  • Diabetes symptoms
  • What to do if you think you may have diabetes
  • Food and exercise
  • Diabetes complications
  • Help and support available
  • Living well with type 2 diabetes

The sessions run between 1-4pm at the Cornwall Deaf Community Centre, Camborne. All are welcome to attend.

Dr Chris Reid, chief medical officer for NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board said: “Complications from diabetes can be very serious and we really want to help people who are deaf or have hearing loss to understand the risks and action they can take to reduce their chance of becoming type 2 diabetic or if they are diabetic, find out more about the healthy steps they can take to reduce their risk of developing a number of serious health problems.

“I would really encourage local people to come along to these events, supported by British Sign language interpreters so they can learn more.”

Clare Greenwood, Hearing Loss Cornwall, said: “We are really pleased that with our advice and support, these 2 tailored diabetic education events are being delivered for local deaf people or people with hearing loss to attend.

“The Cornwall Deaf Community Centre is a great venue and provides a range of support for people who are deaf, and we are pleased that they are hosting these events. All are welcome to attend, and if you know someone who is deaf or is interested in knowing more about diabetes, please encourage them to come along.”

The diabetes advice sessions have been arranged by NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly together with Healthy Cornwall, Diabetes UK and supported by Hearing Loss Cornwall and the Cornwall Deaf Community Centre.
