Truro’s Ian Jones and Judith Backus were both recognised in the New Year Honours list.

Volunteer Cornwall chief executive Mr Jones was awarded an MBE for services to volunteering in Cornwall.

As well as his work with Volunteer Cornwall, Mr Jones is also a governor of Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, chairman of Truro Cricket Club and also a trustee of Community Invasive Non-Native Species Group.

Truro Cricket Club said they were ‘very proud’ to see him recognised in the New Year’s Honours list.

Ms Backus was also honoured with an MBE. Her’s is for services to disadvantaged people in Cornwall.

She is the founder of Hidden Help, a charity that helps people in urgent need of furniture and other items. They help people from single parent families escaping domestic abuse and leaving a shelter or hostel in the local area, to the elderly, vulnerable, long term sick, asylum seekers and ex offenders etc.  They get referrals via social services and other local agencies who are best placed to identify the people we need to help.

Ms Backus, who is now in her 80s, decided she wanted to help the community after moving to Feock and realised there was a demand to help those who had no choice but to start over in life, often with nothing.

She sold some jewellery, inherited from her grandmother, bought a second hand van, and found a small warehouse in Bissoe.

Initially she distributed items herself before her small service grew into Hidden Help, which now has more than 20 volunteers.

Hidden Help said they were really proud of her.

“She is so humble but this is truly deserved,” they said.

“It’s great that she has been recognised for all her hard work over 16 years or so. We are delighted for her.”
