PLANS to bring in 20mph zones for most residential streets in St Austell have been supported by the town council.

The backing comes as Cornwall Council continues its roll-out of 20mph schemes across the county.

The latest phase involves St Austell and a number of surrounding communities including Carlyon Bay, Charlestown, Duporth, Gorran, Mevagissey, Portmellon, Pentewan, Porthpean, St Mewan, Sticker, Tregorrick, Tregrehan Mills, Trelowth-Polgooth-Little Polgooth and Trewoon.

In most locations the existing speed limit is 30mph. Cornwall Council believes reducing the speed limit will bring several benefits, including improving road safety and reducing pollution.

People can give their views on the proposals via www.cornwall.gov.uk/TrafficConsult, with the closing date for responses being Friday, September 13. The results will be published on December 16.

A St Austell Town Council spokesperson said: “Councillors were generally very supportive of applying 20mph speed limits in residential areas in St Austell and Porthpean, and recognised in particular the safety benefits of the reduced speed limits.

“They resolved to endorse the proposals for 20mph speed limits and ask for a report on how the proposed measures would be enforced.”

Cornwall Council has said that people in the St Austell area have previously expressed strong support for 20mph zones.

The council says 20mph zones will “assist in encouraging a transition towards individuals using active travel, particularly for local journeys, resulting in increased journey time reliability and healthier communities.

“Severance by traffic will also be reduced, facilitating a greater use of local community facilities and enabling more liveable streets. As well as encouraging more social interaction, this may also be beneficial to the local economy.”

As part of the 20mph roll-out, new zones have recently been approved for most residential streets to the north of St Austell. The streets are in Bowling Green, Bugle, Carpalla, Coombe, Foxhole, Fraddon, High Street, Hillhead, Indian Queens, Lanjeth, Little Treviscoe, Nanpean, Penhale, Penwithick, Rescorla, Roche, Ruddlemoor, Scredda, St Columb Road, St Dennis, St Stephen, Stenalees, Stepaside, Summercourt, Trerice Terrace, Trethurgy, Trevarren, Treviscoe, Trezaise and Whitemoor.
