A SPORTS club which plays an active role in the community in St Austell has gained a nationwide accolade.
St Austell Table Tennis Club has been picked as one of the two runner-ups across the country in a local heroes competition
The club has been commended for its excellent work in making table tennis easily available for members of the charity Mencap, for school pupils and for the general public.
One of the club’s initiatives has been to provide table tennis sessions in St Austell town centre which anyone can take part in.
The local heroes contest was organised by recruitment business Acorn by Synergie which awarded the club a new sign for outside its premises at Tregorrick.
The competition was launched to highlight the power of sports in bringing people together, fostering community spirit and nurturing future champions.
Crewe and Nantwich Women’s Rugby Union Football Club won the competition with the other runner-up being Coopers Edge Football Club in Gloucester.
Polly Tomlinson, who is based at the Acorn by Synergie office in Truro, said: “We are thrilled to provide St Austell Table Tennis Club with this new sign. The table tennis club has proved to be a great place for the local community, bringing people together alongside keeping fit.”
Club development and welfare officer Craig Mehew said: "We are so grateful to Polly, Danielle, Christina and the team at Acorn by Synergie for the support given to us over the past few months.
“Not only have they kindly purchased the new sign to help attract new members but they have also supported us with events such as community engagement.”
Acorn by Synergie regional director of operations Noal Hoare said: “St Austell Table Tennis Club’s entry really stood out. It’s been great to get recognition for the club as they do amazing work bringing people together.”
