THE work of shapers and makers from the UK sustainable surf community is set to be showcased in Newquay.
Rising Tide, which is described as a grass roots gathering with a focus on sustainability and positive progress for the planet and people, will be staged at the Headland Hotel from August 8 to 11.
The free event is being organised by ECHO Surf Supply and Waterhaul to compliment the celebrations created around Boardmasters.
The event will feature a range of sustainable surf products including boards, hardware, accessories alongside talks and workshops, surfboard shaping and making demonstrations, repairs and a second-hand surfboard swap sale.
Newquay-based Waterhaul will be onsite showcasing their circular solution to the lost fishing gear problem through their range of recycled products including sunglasses, glasses and knives, as well as hosting educational workshops during the event.
Waterhaul’s head of sales, Kieran Hill said: “Positive ocean action is core to everything we do at Waterhaul. Rising Tide was born from a desire to create a space where the local community and people who are visiting Cornwall can connect with innovative boards shapers, local eco-conscious brands, and positively impactful charities.
“Now more than ever, people need to have the opportunity to access information and products that can have a positive impact on the health of our planet and ocean. That’s our aim with Rising Tide.”
Co-organiser Danny Jenks, from ECHO Surf, hopes Rising Tide will provide a meeting point for people to share their ideas and enthusiasm.
Echo Surf’s Matt Rogers said: “All are welcome and it’s a great opportunity to connect with a broad gathering of the UK’s surf community; its pro competitors, festival goers and anyone who takes an interest in surfing or sustainability.”
The Headland’s commitment to sustainability was recently recognised with the award of a prestigious Bronze Benchmark Certification from EarthCheck, the world’s leading scientific benchmarking certification and advisory group for travel and tourism.
The Headland’s sustainability co-ordinator Olivia Giannakoudakis.said: “We’re delighted to be hosting this community event showcasing the skill and artistry of some of the UK’s top sustainable surfboard makers and shapers, and their commitment to sustainability and wider environmental issues.”
