Sunny Corner volunteers have been rewarded for their hard work with an award from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) It’s Your Neighbourhood scheme.
The riverside recreation area, close to Boscawen Park, has been maintained by an enthusiastic group of volunteers since 2016, when it was under threat of being demolished. It is now used by thousands of people, many of whom travel some distance to enjoy its tranquil scenery.
The It’s Your Neighbourhood scheme is aimed at community groups who care for their local environment. Sunny Corner were awarded an ‘Outstanding’ award – its highest possible accolade. The Sunny Corner volunteers, who meet every Tuesday, were each presented with a framed copy of the award by their chairman Paul Caruana.
“The volunteers deserve every recognition for the work they undertake,” he said. “It really is a case of teamwork at its best. Many of us have a long history of using the site to swim, fish or do our courting!
“The comments we receive, often by first-time visitors, are that Sunny Corner is such a beautiful place to visit, sit and contemplate. It is over 100 years old, and our plan is to secure its long-term future for use by generations of Truronians to come.”
