THE Asda underpass in St Austell has been painted with a mural inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s “Starry Night” painting.

Art and design students from Cornwall College’s Creative and Digital Academy have created the mural which also includes local scenery.

The project, planned by student artists from the Cornwall College St Austell campus over the course of a year, aims to give back to the community and brighten up the underpass which is a hotspot for graffiti.

Study programme manager for art and photography James Baggaley said: “We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from passers-by. Everyone who saw the students working on the mural stopped to see how it was coming along and thanked them for creating an amazing feature wall.

“Our students have worked so hard on this project, and we're incredibly proud of what they managed to produce in such a short time.”

Sixteen students worked on the project, including Libby Brookes, April Emery, Ayeisha Lammali, Gabrielle Lilly Shroff, Connie Rose St James, Madison Walker, Vincent Williams, Jessica Drake, Ben Gorring, Ki Jackson, Melissa McFarlane, Oggy Moore, Star Ossitt, Ruby Pomery and Iryna Karpova.

The project was backed by Cornwall councillor Community Chest funding and Cllr Richard Williams-Pears.
