NEWQUAY’S world-class skatepark will be hosting a special event to officially launch phase two of the scheme.
Concrete Waves is staging a half term ‘Skate Jam’ to mark the unveiling of the new beginner’s section on Tuesday, May 28, between 11am and 5pm.
The grand opening event will be a fusion of music, rider demonstrations, competitions for skateboard, BMX and scooter enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels.
Maverick Skateparks, which built the facility and new extension, is organising the event with the support of the Boardmasters Foundation and Newquay Town Council.
Cllr Andy Hannan, the chair of the town council’s environment and facilities committee, said: "We are incredibly excited to host this event in conjunction with Maverick Skateparks, the visionary creators of the initial park and the new section, with the generous backing of Boardmasters Foundation.
“Whether you're a seasoned rider or simply looking for a fun day out with family and friends, the Concrete Waves Skate Jam is the place to be this May half term.”
Competitions will be run informally, organised by the MC and geared to the people who arrive on the day.
Prizes will be given out throughout the event, with judging handled by the MC, guest riders and the crowd.
There will be professional rider demonstrations and open riding sessions in between the competitions.
Russ Holbert, the director of Maverick Skateparks, said: “The introduction of phase two to Concrete Waves cements the park’s status as a world class destination for riders of all abilities.
“Huge kudos to Newquay Town Council for delivering this to the skate community.
“We are stoked to be hosting the half term skate jam to showcase the up-and-coming talent the region is nurturing, together with demos from our professional riders. We hope to see you there.”
Andrew Topham, the CEO and founder of Boardmasters Festival, said: “Action sports have always been the heart and soul of Boardmasters since its inception; and as a team it’s a collective passion of ours, particularly witnessing emerging sporting talent in the South West.
“We’re proud to be contributing to the event through our Boardmasters Foundation, which enables us to further give back to the local community and in this instance, nurture the brilliant young athletes in skateboarding and BMX. “Best of luck to everyone competing, and big thanks to Maverick for bringing the event to life.”
Cllr Hannan added: “The event wouldn't be possible without the generous support of the event’s sponsors, including Boardmasters Foundation, Camp Rubicon, TR7, Flavour, Polar, Deez Nutz, Southwest Skate Co, Hoax, Tech Deck, Koncrete Killerz, Dominator, Butters, Dogg Scooters, Enuff Skateboards, Tribal Bikes, Chilli Scooters, Micro Scooters, Stuntman Mechanix and Visit Skateboarding.”
