Two events are being held in Cornwall this month to shine a spotlight on suicide prevention.

service of reflection will be held at Truro Cathedral on World Suicide Prevention Day this Sunday. Open to anyone affected by suicide, of all faiths or none, it will feature specially chosen readings alongside music from Mousehole Male Voice Choir and Singing for Wellbeing - a support group for people bereaved by suicide.

The service starts at 2pm, with no need to book. Refreshments will be available and after the service, there will be a chance to speak to a Samaritan, the Trust's chaplains or the Suicide Liaison Team.

Anne Embury, lead for Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust's Suicide Liaison Service, said: "We are very grateful to the cathedral for holding this special service, which is a chance to reflect on lives lost to suicide.

“The service has come to mean a lot to those who attend, as it is both moving and uplifting in equal measure. It offers people a calm, supportive and safe space to come together and reflect.”

On Thursday, September 14, swimmers are invited to don their caps for the second Turn the Tide on Suicide Swim in Penzance’s Jubilee Pool. The event aims to help raise awareness and break down the stigma associated with suicide. Swim tickets will be free between 9am and 10am and you can book your slot on the Jubilee Pool website.

“Both events will help bring a focus on how we try to reduce the number of suicides in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly,” Anne adds. “They are very much about creating hope through action.”
