Mevagissey and Fowey have welcomed the RNLI Connecting Our Communities Bicentenary Scroll.

Fowey Lifeboat Station hosted a day of celebration on Saturday, which included the St Austell Coastguard Team, before the scroll marking 200 years of the RNLI was taken on to Mevagissey.

The scroll was signed by people in both ports.

A Fowey RNLI spokesperson said: “Connecting Our Communities is an Olympic Torch-style relay event in which a specially-made scroll is being transported across the UK.”

The scroll was welcomed by Mevagissey RNLI honorary president Sheila Beesley as it arrived in the port. St Austell and Newquay MP Steve Double attended the occasion as did Fowey Lifeboat crew members.

Sheila said: “I am delighted that one of our oldest members Mary Crawshaw has been chosen to sign the scroll. Her late husband Andrew was a former president of our branch as well as being the village doctor.”
