A Newquay primary school has a new magazine thanks to the efforts of students.

The Year 6 Newquay Junior Academy lunchtime newspaper club has published “The NJA Buzz”, which features everything from interviews with teachers to recipe ideas and cartoons.

There’s even a guide to staff who are in the naughty and nice list – and the hot topic of whether crisps belong in sandwiches is debated.

The children have been helped to put the magazine together by writer and author Ruth Pocock, who published children’s book Sixteen Sizes Smaller, an interactive adventure story where the reader can choose what to do at the end of each chapter.

Pupil Petra said: “I really enjoyed working on the magazine, especially adding my own content. It was very educational.”

Scarlet added: “I really enjoyed working on the magazine with Ruth. The best part was the magazine’s mascot Woof, who is a Labrador mixed with a Doberman.”

Ruth said: “I’m really passionate about getting young children discovering reading and writing in different ways, especially those who don’t enjoy regular books and lessons. The children threw themselves into it, and although we were all in at the deep end, they did brilliantly.

“They made all the editorial decisions, from content to images, they came up with some brilliant ideas, including the mascot Woof, drawn by Scarlet, and they loved going out and interviewing teachers and children. It’s been great to see them enjoying interviewing, doing vox pops and polls, taking photos, researching and compiling puzzle/art pages.

“We have used the super-helpful Jamie from PJ Print.”
