RNLI volunteers put the pedal to the metal in Newquay to help raise £400 for the charity.

Members of the crew and fundraising team cycled on a cross trainer at Truscott’s Fish and Chip Shop on Fore Street in aid of Newquay Lifeboat Station.

They took turns to cycle for three hours during the virtual bike ride to see how far up the coast they could get.

Stormy Stan was in attendance to encourage the riders to push their limits, which attracted a crowd of supporters. The riders, many who had not been on a bike in decades, managed to cover a distance of 45 miles.

The fundraiser was held as part of the RNLI’s MayDay campaign where lifesavers called on supporters to cover at least one mile in any way they chose and raise vital funds.

A spokesperson for Newquay RNLI Lifeboats, said: “The sun brought out lots of supporters for our MayDay Challenge.

“Even Stormy Stan came along for an hour. He thoroughly enjoyed meeting the children.

“We made over £400 for RNLI funds, which these days represents less than the cost of two weeks' fuel for Newquay’s lifeboats.

“Thanks to everyone who took part, and special thanks to Di Thain for letting us use her shop.”
