Redruth Royal Marine Sam Hammond, who is based at RNAS Culdrose, set a world record by running the London Marathon with a fridge on his back.

Sam, 30, ran in aid of armed forces charity SSAFA and shaved 57 minutes off the previous record for the fastest marathon carrying a household appliance, finishing in 4:52:10.

He added this to the world record he broke in February by running the fastest male half-marathon with the white goods at Brighton.

The marathon was his longest undertaking, having previously run 20 miles. Cpl Hammond’s fundraising journey started in 2022 when he took on the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge while carrying the fridge, he has nicknamed “Fridget Jones”.

He said: “Started off really well, but accidentally running too fast for the first 15 miles with the incredible atmosphere. Pace slowed down by about 20 seconds until I hit mile 21.

“Cramp became my enemy and the battle got tough, a mixture of walking and running saw me struggle to the finish.

“Thanks to every single person that has messaged, supported, followed me or donated it is hugely appreciated.”
