Cornwall Fire & Rescue were contacted by police just after 4am this morning requesting assistance as officers dealing with an incident had noticed smoke inside Penzance railway station.

Two appliances were mobilised from Penzance. On arrival crews found a small fire which was extinguished by two firefighters in breathing apparatus using a hose reel jet and positive pressure ventilation fan. The cause of the fire is suspected to be arson and investigations into whether the fire was started deliberately are ongoing.

A spokesman for the Devon & Cornwall Police stated that 'Emergency services were called at 3.55am today [January 26] to Penzance railway station following report of a possible burglary.'

A 29-year-old man from Torquay has been arrested on suspicion of burglary and arson. He remains in police custody at this time.
