FARMERS Movement Cornwall have organised a rally which will take place in Truro this weekend in a call to support farming and food security.
The public will gather at Truro Livestock Market at noon on Saturday, November 23, in a display of solidarity to those working in agriculture at a time of outrage at proposed changes to agricultural land inheritance rules.
The rally will make it’s way down Trafalgar Roundabout, then onto St Austell Street, before arrive at Victoria Square at around 12.30pm where speeches will take place. Crowd marshals will be in attendance and the public is encouraged to bring flags and placards.
At the end of October, the government announced in its budget that it would be making changes to agricultural property relief (APR). Farmers have express their concerns saying that the changes will lead to land being sold to pay the tax bill, impact food security and the future of British farming.
In response to the government’s plans, farmers across the UK have pledged to carry out protests, with many travelling to the capital today (November 19) to make their feelings known. Tractors have descended on London with farmers, including TV presenter and celebrity farmer Jeremy Clarkson, voicing their concerns.
