Truro's Poppy Appeal was launched last weekend by the Truro branch of the Royal British Legion.

Kernow Pipes and Drums played stirring music and led a parade of civic dignitaries and Royal British Legion members from the Legion’s offices through Boscawen Street, ending at High Cross where Canon Alan Bashforth said prayers on the steps of Truro Cathedral and Gillian Allen played The Last Post.

Those present kept two minutes’ silence at 11am, and placed memorial crosses. The parade processed back to the Royal British Legion office via St Mary’s Street, after which branch members and volunteers sold poppies around the city centre, raising more than £1,300.

“It couldn’t have gone better,” said Anne Kemp. “The weather was good, there was so much camaraderie, great team work. Everyone was there for the same purpose: to help our servicemen and veterans, and their dependents, and to remember the fallen.”

Poppies are now being sold in supermarkets including Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose.
