Year 11 history students from Pool Academy recently had the opportunity to immerse themselves in British history with a two-day educational trip to London.
Their itinerary was packed with unforgettable experiences, providing the students with firsthand encounters of key historical sites and events.
The trip began with an informative guided tour of the Houses of Parliament, where students not only learned about the workings of government but also had the privilege of saying hello to Perran Moon, MP for the Camborne and Redruth constituency.
The group even got to stand in Westminster Hall, where they were able to reflect on the significance of the location, once the site of trials for figures such as Guy Fawkes and King Charles I before their executions.
The students then ventured into Whitechapel, exploring the notorious streets once terrorised by the infamous Jack the Ripper. At the Imperial War Museum, they visited the Holocaust exhibition, offering them a deeply moving opportunity to reflect on one of history's most tragic events.
The trip culminated in a thrilling immersive experience centred around the Gunpowder Plot. Students experienced the plot’s dramatic twists and turns in an interactive setting, ending the trip on a literal bang.
Principal Nick Ward said: “Throughout the entire visit, our Year 11 students were exceptional ambassadors for the school, demonstrating enthusiasm, curiosity, and respect as they engaged with the rich history on display.
“We want all our students to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, develop perspective and judgement as well as write accurate narratives of the past.
“We aim for students to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.”
