A FORMER MP has announced he is standing for election to Cornwall Council.

Conservative Steve Double, who was the MP for St Austell and Newquay for nine years until he lost his seat to Labour’s Noah Law in last summer’s General Election, is standing in the division that covers St Mewan, Polgooth, Sticker, Trewoon, Grampound, St Ewe and the surrounding communities.

Mr Double said: “I have always been passionate about serving the people of this part of Cornwall and, after nine years as their MP, I now want to use my experience at a local level to deliver for our communities.

“We face significant challenges, from planning decisions that could impact our villages to ensuring vital services are properly funded and protected. Cornwall needs strong, experienced voices at County Hall, and I am determined to stand up for local people, fight for the investment we need, and make sure our communities get the support they deserve.”

Mr Double has previously served on Cornwall Council and its cabinet. He is also a former mayor of St Austell.

Councillor Michael Bunney, of Mebyon Kernow, has represented the division for the last four years but has decided not to seek re-election on May 1.

Mr Double said: “I want to take this opportunity to thank Michael for his hard work and dedication in representing St Mewan and Grampound on Cornwall Council. Public service is not always easy, and I respect the commitment he has shown to our local communities during his time as councillor. He and I have always worked well together locally despite having different political views but we both share a passion and commitment to Cornwall.

“I have a proven track record of getting things done and I am committed to continuing that work. I will always put our local communities first and ensure their voices are heard.”
