PLANS have been unveiled to build a community centre at Newquay’s urban extension.

The Nansledan Community Centre will be located in one of the Duchy’s ground floor commercial units at Kew An Lergh, a commercial development which was completed last year.

The development is a collaboration between the Duchy of Cornwall, the Nansledan Community Association and mental health charity, Cornwall Mind.

The new space will be run by the Nansledan Community Association, in partnership with Cornwall Mind, to support a range of community groups and clubs, support groups, community events, local charities and other organisations, and to support the wellbeing of Nansledan residents and businesses.

The association, which recently became a Community Interest Company, is working to fit out the space with new flooring and blinds and is appealing to any local businesses that may be able to donate materials to get in touch.

The new centre has been prompted in part by the planned relocation next year of the Newquay Methodist Centre's Hub activities in Nansledan to a new community building and place of worship at Pargolla Road.

Newquay Community Association’s Theresa Ferguson said: “We're very excited to have this new community space for Nansledan. It will bring people together and offer a place for a wide range of activities, providing a seamless handover for when the Hub relocates next year.

“We're grateful for the support we've received already, especially from the Duchy of Cornwall, which has provided the space and can't wait to get it open.”

“Supporting the growth of a vibrant, connected community is at the heart of Nansledan’s vision, and this space will play a vital role in bringing local people together in many different positive ways. We look forward to seeing how it becomes a focal point for various events, activities and wellbeing focused services, benefiting the whole community.”

“This new centre will not only provide a community space but will also serve as a vital resource for mental health support. The Duchy of Cornwall is also launching a pilot Community Support & Wellbeing Service for Nansledan residents as part of a wider mental health strategy across the Duchy estate.

The scheme will be delivered in partnership with Life & Progress, a nationally recognised independent provider of mental health and wellbeing support, to provide free of charge community care to all residents and businesses in Nansledan. 

A date for the opening of the new community centre will be announced in due course.
