Urban Green Shoots has been helped by members of Newquay in Bloom and residents to plant newly created Space for Nature beds.

An archaeological dig and groundwork have been carried out ahead of a new art installation being installed, which will be the first of three ceramic monoliths that will be erected around the town.

Councillor Olly Monk said: “The top resin coat is now being applied on the new path, which should be finished by Easter.

“It really is a good project. The final plan is to be able to get the accessible trail all the way down to Porth Beach.

“I was among those getting my hands dirty with Newquay in Bloom and the teams from Cormac Urban Green Shoots planting out the beds.

“I have been told that all the plants have been carefully selected to ensure they will grow in the harsh windy climate that they will encounter.”

A spokesperson for Alma Artspace added: “We have broken ground at the Barrowfields.

“We spent the most amazing day in the sunshine at The Barrowfields, on-site with the teams from Cornwall Council and Cornwall Archaeological Unit.

“We observed the preparation of the ground at the proposed site of the first monolith and we watched the team carefully excavating the earth by hand.

“We also enjoyed a guided heritage walk across the Barrowfields, learning all about this ancient site and the rituals observed by Newquay’s Bronze Age inhabitants.

“The Barrowfields hold so many stories about Newquay’s past and we are so glad that the Newquay Monoliths will symbolise the town’s contemporary community.”
