A pioneering robotic prostate treatment is now available for patients at Duchy Hospital in Truro.
The ground-breaking treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) uses the AquaBeam® Robotic System, an innovative procedure that was performed successfully for the first time on two patients in September.
Around three million men in the UK have lower urinary tract symptoms due to BPH, with 35,000 requiring surgery annually. While traditional procedures like TURP - a surgical procedure used to cut away a section of the prostate gland - offer effective relief, they carry risks such as incontinence, erectile dysfunction and ejaculatory issues.
Aquablation therapy offers a highly precise, robot-assisted and minimally invasive solution, utilising high-velocity water under real-time imaging to accurately remove prostate tissue with minimal side effects. Key benefits include faster recovery, reduced risk of complications and preservation of sexual function.
Nic Munro, consultant urologist at Duchy Hospital, said: “My goal is to treat my patients’ symptoms while preserving their quality of life. Aquablation therapy has been instrumental in helping me achieve this for patients struggling with BPH, and I’m excited to offer it to men in Cornwall and the South West.”
Duchy Hospital will host patient information events across Cornwall and will engage with local GPs to inform them about referral options. For more information or to schedule a consultation, call 01872 226157.
