A new petition has been launched calling for speed cameras to be installed on the A3083 Culdrose Road in Helston after another fatal car accident in the area.

The Change.org petition has been signed by more than 850 people in less than 48 hours, showing the strength of local calls for enhanced speed measures on the road after a 22-year-old man died in a two-car crash last weekend.

On Saturday, December 14, emergency services were notified just after midnight to a report of a collision involving two vehicles. As a result of the collision, the driver of one of the vehicles was declared deceased at the scene.

Police, fire service and ambulance resources all attended the scene and a detailed investigation was conducted by Roads Policing Officers and a Forensic Collision Investigator.

Daniel Thirkill, who started the petition, writes: “Over the years, we’ve lost loved ones, fathers, mothers, siblings, and friends to preventable accidents caused by speeding. With a pavement and cycle path, pedestrians and cyclists, especially, are also vulnerable, as the lack of speed restrictions creates a hostile and dangerous environment for all road users. By implementing a 60mph average speed camera, we can drastically reduce the likelihood of high-speed collisions and save lives.”

Stuart Thomas, a supporter of Daniel’s petition, adds: “It makes so much sense. The amount of preventable deaths on this road is absolutely criminal. Why nothing has been done about this, where in other areas there have been limits set is quite frankly absurd.”
