PEOPLE have been wowed by one of winter’s spectacles in the skies above Newquay.
Various murmurations, which are huge groups of Starlings, have been twisting, turning, swooping and swirling across the sky in beautiful shape-shifting clouds.
Resident Paul Bellamy filmed a number of murmurations in Henver Road near Lusty Glaze Beach.
Scientists believe that murmurations offer safety in numbers; protection from predators like Peregrine Falcons that are attracted by the sheer number of birds.
They always form over the birds’ communal roosting site following the migrant Starlings arriving in early December.
Paul said: “It was an amazing spectacle.
“The clips don’t do the noise justice. The Starlings were all around you and the sound and wind rush was unreal.
“Mother nature at its best.
“We’re so lucky here in Newquay to have all the recent sea life visits from Humpback whales, dolphins and huge amounts of seals.
“Then this with a beautiful red sky back drop. Life is good.”
