A group of volunteer cyclists have raised a record amount for Cornish healthcare charity Cornwall Hospice Care. 

The £110,355 will fund 4,598 hours of nursing care at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell and St Julia’s hospice in Hayle. 

The 36 cyclists set off from St Mawes to ride to Mont-Saint-Michel, France. 

Many were taking part in memory of a loved one including Chris who said at the time: “My wife Lesley died in November and spent her last few days at St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle where the team were unbelievable. 

“They were really fantastic looking after her and so it means a lot to me to do this with her brother who’s also riding for the charity.” 

Their journey took them to Plymouth and the ferry to Brittany and then along several hundred miles of scenic roads with stunning scenery to the finish at the imposing and beautiful Mont St Michell.  

Cycling alongside the group was Oli Hoare, co-event director, who said: “What an achievement by our amazing cyclists! This is a remarkable result from a very special group of volunteer fundraisers who put their hearts and souls in to making this event the success it is.  

“To explain, the £110,355 raised will fund 4,598 hours of hospice nursing care and that means our entire nurse provision every hour of the next 26 days at our two units where we care for people 24 hours a day, is funded and that’s spectacular. 

“I can’t say a big enough thank you to them all.” 

Jane Appleton, co-event director, added: “It was an incredible week of adventure with a group of inspirational people who blew us away with their determination to not only cycle the 278 miles, but to ensure our hospices are there for those patients and families that need them, now and in the future.”
