ONE of a Penzance gallery’s most famous paintings will shortly be going on tour to Tate Britain as part of its exhibition.
‘Penlee House’s School is Out’ by Elizabeth Forbes has been selected to be a part of the NowYou See Us:Women Artists in Britain 1520 — 1920.
The exhibition, which runs from May 16 to October 13, follows women on their journeys to becoming professional artists.
Including more than 150 works the exhibition gives people the opportunity to discover the artists who forged a path for generations to come.
A spokesperson for Penlee House said: “The show dismantles stereotypes surrounding women artists in history, who were often thought of as amateurs.
“Determined to succeed, they challenged what it meant to be a working woman of the time by going against society’s expectations having commercial careers as artists and taking part in public exhibitions.
“The exhibition sheds light on how these artists championed equal access to art training and academy membership, breaking boundaries and overcoming many obstacles to establish what it meant to be a woman in the art world.”
A Tate Britain spokesperson added: “Spanning 400 years, this exhibition follows women on their journeys to becoming professional artists.”
